Greece: Secrets of the Past

Greece, a once great civilization now in ruin, is uncovered. Archaeologists uncover ruins on Santorini Island, a place where Atlantis is rumored to be, and Athens, named for Athena goddess of wisdom. Santorini Island was covered in the ash from a volcanic explosion. Athens was left in ruin because of the way it had spent itself.

Santorini Island was where the Greeks settled before finding the place they would call Athens. There has been findings of pictures from the walls of homes left destroyed. Some of the pictures told the Greeks' everyday lives such as picking fruit, or sailing in boats that were massive. The greatest mystery was how people survived, because no bodies were found, and some had to sail to Athens. When the volcano erupted, there was not only lava, there was enormous ash clouds that were toxic, and from the sea there were sixty foot waves, tsunamis, surrounding them. They could not escape, but they did. This is a great mystery to me.

Athens was Greece's main city. Named for the goddess Athena, it was the glory of Greece. The temple like structure on the acropolis cost Greek many fortunes. The Greek also battled many wars like the war with the Persians, the Peloponnesian War, and the Trojan War. As I said the Greeks were spent, I did not only mean money, I meant their many battles as well. They were depleted of their armies, and had little money left.

Today, Greece is a thriving country.. They have a navy as well as an air force. They are a prime tourist destination, with sixteen and a half million people visiting every year, and Greece is the favorite destination of travel in China and Austria. Greece's people speak Greek as their first or only language.

There are still so many secrets about Greece that we need to learn. Was Atlantis real? How did Greece get so powerful? These are some very interesting questions. Greece was a great influence to the world we know today.
